SWING

(and Lindy Hop, West Coast Swing, Jitterbug and more)

Swing is an umbrella term for a wide variety of dance styles, danced to many types of music—from big-band and rockabilly to R&B and blues.

Our swing dance lessons alternate between Lindy Hop, West Coast Swing, and Jitterbug. (We offer East Coast Swing lessons in our Ballroom & Latin Class.)

Pre-registration required for this class. Check our calendar to see which swing dance class is open for enrollment, or contact us to sign up!

Lindy Hop

Lindy Hop is the original swing dance—a fun, energetic style danced to Big Band, Rockabilly, and Jazz music. Lindy Hop is a highly popular and ever-evolving dance. Our classes will open the doors for you to become a part of the sprawling Los Angeles Lindy Hop community.

In our Lindy Hop dance lessons, you’ll learn both linear and circular figures, and how to switch between the 6-count and 8-count rhythm. We will also teach you how to maximize your musical expression, through emphasizing the swing rhythm and “hanging” on the beat.

We’ll also explore other swing dance styles popular in the Lindy Hop community, such as Balboa (a compact type of swing with frequent body contact) and Charleston (a playful dance style characterized by stylized kicks).

Some patterns that we cover in our Lindy Hop dance classes:

  • Eight-Count Scoop
  • Swing Out
  • Charleston Kicks
  • Lindy Circle
  • Kick-Through Charleston

West Coast Swing

West Coast Swing is a relaxed, contemporary style of swing danced to Blues, R&B, Country and a variety of popular music. It was invented in California and remains extremely popular in Los Angeles.

West Coast Swing is a primarily linear dance, with the lady dancing on the “slot”, which makes it ideal for the crowded club scene. Unlike many other swing styles, West Coast Swing has no “bounce”. Instead the feeling is smooth and gliding, as though you are traveling across the floor on rollerblades. In addition, it relies on a distinct, sophisticated leverage connection.

Some patterns that we cover in our West Coast Swing dance classes:

  • Sugar Push
  • Underarm Turn
  • Leftside Pass
  • Rightside Pass
  • Whip
  • Whip Variation
  • Tuck Turn with Variation

Jitterbug

Jitterbug is a simple, athletic dance designed for the the very fastest swing music. When the music is too quick to comfortably allow triple-time East Coast Swing, you can switch to double-time or single time swing, known as Jitterbug. Although still high energy, Jitterbug is a fun, user-friendly version of swing that is excellent for beginners.

Some patterns that we cover in our Jitterbug dance classes:

  • Basic turning right and left
  • Underarm release right
  • Underarm turn left
  • Throw out
  • Tuck In Turn
  • Cradles
  • Hammerlock
  • Assorted Variations on the Basic Figures
